Stress + Dental
Stress and bruxism can overlap, but I clench because I'm stressed is not a complete diagnosis. Here is what to watch for and when the dentist belongs in the conversation.

Bruxism is repetitive jaw-muscle activity that can include clenching, grinding or bracing. It can happen during sleep or while awake. Some people have no symptoms; others develop muscle fatigue, headaches, tooth wear, fractures or sensitivity.
Systematic reviews find associations between stress symptoms and sleep bruxism, but the certainty of evidence has been low. Bruxism also overlaps with sleep, medications, stimulants, alcohol, caffeine and other factors. That is why simply telling someone to relax is not a treatment plan.
A dentist can look for wear patterns, fractures, muscle tenderness, joint findings and bite-related issues. Depending on the diagnosis, management might include behavior awareness, physical therapy, sleep evaluation, a properly designed appliance or treatment of damaged teeth.
If you clench, grind, wake with jaw pain or keep damaging dental work, schedule with Dr. Chione Daniel for an evaluation.
