Light + Dental
What red light therapy actually is, where photobiomodulation has dental evidence, and where a consumer wellness device should not be confused with dental treatment.

“Red light therapy” is the wellness-world phrase. In clinical research, you will often see photobiomodulation (PBM) or low-level light/laser therapy. PBM uses specific wavelengths and carefully controlled doses of non-ionizing light. The dose, wavelength, power, treatment time and target tissue matter. That is why a medical or dental PBM protocol cannot be assumed to be equivalent to a consumer face mask or a generic red-light panel.
One of the strongest dental and oral-care evidence areas is prevention or management of oral mucositis in selected patients receiving chemotherapy or head-and-neck radiotherapy. This is not a DIY use case; protocols are tied to the oncology setting and should be coordinated with the treatment team.
Research on PBM for temporomandibular disorders suggests potential improvements in pain and jaw function, although studies use different treatment parameters and the evidence is not a reason to skip a diagnosis. Jaw pain can come from muscle overuse, clenching, joint problems, bite changes, trauma and other causes.
PBM is also being studied around oral surgery, wound healing and pain. The research is promising in selected settings, but protocols are not interchangeable and it should be treated as an adjunct, not a replacement for diagnosis, infection control, restorative care or appropriate medication.
If you have jaw pain, clenching, oral soreness, gum concerns, tooth sensitivity or questions after a dental procedure, schedule a dental evaluation with Dr. Chione Daniel. The goal is to identify the cause first and decide what treatment, light-based or otherwise, makes sense.
